ACTION ALERT: TELL PRESIDENT OBAMA THAT ALL WOMEN DESERVE
A few months ago, the Black Women’s Health Imperative celebrated the Department of Health and Human Services’ announcement that all new health plans will be required to cover contraception without co-pays. This marked a major step towards ensuring that all women have access to vital preventive services that promote better health outcomes.
At the same time, we were deeply troubled that HHS included an exemption that allows certain religious employers to refuse to offer contraceptive coverage to their employees.
WE URGENTLY NEED YOUR HELP! In a few days, the Obama Administration will make a decision to expand the religious exemption to include schools, universities, and hospitals as religious employers. If this happens, millions of individuals and employees, including students, teachers, doctors, nurses and other health professionals, would no longer be entitled to contraceptive coverage without co-pays.
An estimated 11.2 million women, aged 15-44, use FDA approved oral contraceptives. Birth control not only prevents unintended pregnancies, but also has other health benefits, including reducing the risk of cancer, pelvic inflammatory disease, and protecting against osteoporosis.
Please take a moment to contact the White House at 202-559-1164 and tell President Obama that all women deserve affordable contraception. No woman should be denied access to contraceptive coverage because of their employer’s religious beliefs.
Thank you for taking action to protect the health of all women.
